Servage Web Development Course Part 6: Protect your files and folders with htaccess

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 by Servage
Hey there! Part five is now a few weeks old, and it's about time for the next step! Today the topic is simple file/folder protection with the help of htaccess (don't worry if you have no clue what that means). When you develop on a new project it's nice to be able to keep the public out, while working on it. And I am sure you can also come up with a whole lot of different reasons why you would want to protect certain files. What is htaccess protection? Htaccess files (hypertext access files) allow you to alter the configuration of the web-server to an extend permitted by the server administrator (which ...

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 by Steffan Sondermark
Lately we have improved our backend considerably with new clustered file systems and the secure high performance ServageOS. Now the time has come to a complete overhaul of the control panel layout we have used the last five years! The new layout is considerably easier to use and includes many web 2.0 components, such as interactive help from the wiki and complete uptime reports. The navigation has been made more dynamic making the control panel faster to use. One of the added benefits with this new CP is that it is designed to make it easier to add new functionality to our service. This will ensure that our service remains state of the art. All enhancements have been made with our customers in ...

Subscribing to mailing list with AJAX

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by Servage
mailing_list_apiWe have received a few requests about the mailing list API. There has especially been interest in how to integrate the mailing list to an existing website without going through any Servage subscribe/unsubscribe pages. Therefore I have created a very simple sample AJAX integration example, and thought it would be interesting for some of your as well. You need to include the jQuery library, and please be aware that the email validation is very basic, and please also note that most browsers will not allow the API call because it goes outside the scope of your domain/URL (i.e. it tries to connect to Servage's domain, instead of yours). In such cases ...

Hosting in the cloud

Monday, June 22nd, 2009 by Servage
cloudThe term "cloud" has become highly present in the IT industry during recent times. Making something available or putting something "in the cloud" is a major trend. So what is the fuzz all about? What are those clouds actually doing? Cloud computing is defined as scalable resources made available to users as a service over the Internet. Cloud services are programs running as software as a service within scalable environments. Providers of scalable/cloud resources are for example Google Appspot, Amazon Web Services and most web hosting companies, like ourselves, that offer you a set of resources within a cluster (e.g. cloud) of servers. Take your hosting account as an example: You have your files ...

Encrypt data between your site and visitors

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 by Servage
combinationlockInformation is vulnerable to spies during the transmission of data between your website and your visitors. All data is sent in packages and can potentially be obtained by third parties. This is especially easy in unencrypted or poorly encrypted wireless networks, where anyone basically can see everything, because it is transmitted right through the air. Therefore using encrypted transmissions for sensitive data is risky, which is why every website should use encrypted transmissions for at least login, signup, ordering and payment procedures. How can I encrypt the data? The encryption of data is done with help of a SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate. The SSL certificate fulfills multiple purposes, but mainly it ...

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 by Servage
geoip_wildcardsThe GeoIP Security that was introduced in January now supports the use of wildcards to allow IP ranges in addition to specific IPs. This means you can allow entire blocks of IP addresses with one setting, instead of having to add each address individually. What does the GeoIP Security feature do? It enables you to restrict access to login to your Servage account based on the user's country or IP address. You find it in the control panel at "Your Account > GeoIP Login Security". Allowing specific addresses: 12.34.56.78 34.56.78.90 ... Allowing address ranges: 12.34.56.* This allows any address starting with 12.34.56 12.34.* This allows any address ...
