Using WordPress Plugins

Saturday, June 8th, 2013 by Servage

WordPress is undoubtedly most used opensource based on PHP. WordPress is simple and easy platform for web designers since its core does  not consist of many intricate features, but they can be added according to the needs of the clients. Thus, it is great at performance and adaptability. Many novice developers are not much familiar with plug-ins phenomenon. In due course, I have tried to give some introductory knowledge through this post, particularly installing them.

As stated earlier WordPress core is simple and devoid of much complexities. Therefore, it is easy to install and smooth in performance. Usually you will have all features and functionality required to run a simple blog or website with this core and hardly need any plug-in to install. When your requirements are exceeding the limits of core, you need to start WordPress plug-ins for each new feature. Today we have rage of plug-ins to choose for a single requirement due to hard work of plug-in developers and we can install them with simple ways with or without the help of experienced WordPress developer.

Trusted Source

Either plug-ins are available freely on the web, free or with some negligible fees, but the best and trusted source for WordPress plug-ins is WordPress plug-ins directory. You might have question that why we should check the background to the source. Right, but today web is full of vulnerability and finding the trusted source is advisable to get bug free and reliable plug-in source. This directory is running by volunteers and hosting well-tested plug-ins sources.

Ways To Install

If your website or blog is still hosted on WordPress.com you have to move it on WordPress.org or hosted on your choice of the host so you can find and install plug-ins to meet your requirements. Once you finish the self-hosting upload of your website, you can go to Administration Panel to install the plug-in where you need to select the Plugins tab then Add New panel to add your choice of plug-in. alternatively you can add plug-in through Official WordPress Plugins Directory directly by following their instructions.

Process

WordPress has in-built installer so you need not go for any complicated process or at coding side. You can simply select the plugins tab on the admin panel and begin process through clicking on Add New button. Now, you will have a bunch of plugins lists along with short description, its version number and rating given by other users. Thus, you have ample room to make a wise decision based on the experiences of previous users and selecting a compatible version for your website. Sometimes plug-in requires some special treatment to install and all of those you will find along with the details of the plug-in as installation guidelines.

Once the installation process is finished, you need to activate the plug-in clicking on the Activate Plug-in button where you can configure your plug-in according to your needs. If in case, you are not getting plug-in from the plugins directory and use other sources where you have plug-ins with non-GPL license and paid. You have to take another route to install plug-in. To do so you need to go to admin panel click on Plugins and then add new, then click on upload tab where you will find option to upload plug-in source in zip format.  Here you can upload the plug-in source that you have downloaded from 3rd party site and kept in zip format.

FTP Manager

If you are a beginner, and unfamiliar with FTP manager, you might have some hard time to use FTP manager software or add-on on the browser like Mozilla at first hand. However, this is not complicated as you think because in the latest FTP managers, you simply have to do is drag and drop the zipped source of plug-in and unzip it after uploading. Once installation is finished, you can activate it same as you have read above. If you are experiencing any problem during installation, you can either take help of experienced WordPress developer or go to the WordPress community and place your question you will be guided properly there.
