Remember secure passwords easily

Thursday, February 26th, 2009 by Servage
keypadIt's easy for service providers to ask their users to use secure passwords. After all it is the user who is supposed to remember it. Obviously it is better for everyone if secure passwords are being used everywhere, but for many people it represents an annoyance to use a password like "237IMBd!" instead of "pizza". However, there are plenty of ways making it easier to remember secure passwords - and some of them even add a little bit of fun to the process ;-) I would like to explain my personal way of generating and using secure passwords as an inspiration to figure out a way that works for you, and moreover, ...

Exclusive preview on email filtering

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 by Servage
mailfilterLast fall Servage introduced global server-side spam- and virus-filtering. The anti-spam functionality is powered by a customizable SpamAssassin system, which enables you to set an own set of rules for the handling of junk mail. The virus filter is powered by ClamAV which removes any email that includes malware. Since its introduction the system has identified hundreds of thousands of unsolicited mails being sent to email accounts hosted at Servage. In the meantime a number of customers have requested a filtering option to allow even more advanced and powerful rules for email-handling. With filters one could for example automatically collect messages from a specific sender, addressed to a specific recipient, containing certain words ...

Sunday, February 15th, 2009 by Servage
seoSearch engines are not just search engines. For many websites they are one of the primary ways of promotion by driving traffic from the search engines to the site. However, the Internet has billions of websites, hence searches for common terms may result in millions of results - making it unlikely that your website is among the top results by default. Search engine optimization (called SEO) is the action of modifying a website to be as accurate and search engine friendly as possible, so it becomes more likely it is displayed among the top results for a given search. I will help you to understand the basics of SEO in this article. Search engines ...

Identifying hacked code

Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Servage
matrixFrom time to time we are seeing that customers' websites are being hacked. This is very unfortunate and extremely frustrating because it often involves big hassles for the webmaster to repair the damage. Such intrusions are seen coming from different points of entry, which for instance could be via FTP after sniffing a password or via installed scripts like a CMS, forum, blog or similar. The main plot of the stories is commonly the same, while the scenes and actors vary. Often the goal of the intruder is to drive traffic from your website to the hacker's own page or network of pages - for instance to gain a financial benefit ...

Is your website standard compliant?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009 by Servage
vcss-bluevalid-xhtml11-bluevalid-html401-blueEveryone who ever tried creating a website probably knows that annoying experience of HTML pages not being displayed the same way in every browser. Especially Internet Explorer, but also older versions of other browsers, are having a hard time showing your site the way you intended it to look. The reason for this is browsers interpreting HTML code and CSS styles differently. In many cases this has lead developers to create workarounds, including the use of invalid HTML or CSS, to trick the browsers into displaying the content in a similar way. These issues ...

Open source routing anniversary

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 by Servage
network_cableAbout one year ago we gave ourselves the task to get fairly common server hardware perform the tasks of traditional and (very) expensive commercial routers. Our network has been using open source based border routers (BGP/OSPF) for over a year now and performance and availability of the network has improved considerably. Plain simply we can now build better and even more redundancy into our network with the available resources. We chose an open source routing platform that uses a Cisco-like syntax and similar commands. That made the transition convenient and our routing specialists could work with the new system the same way as they were used to. This avoided human errors that are ...
